Tobie Nathan
Professor emeritus of psychology at Université–Paris VIII, Tobie Nathan is the author of a dozen novels and numerous psychoanalytic studies. Born to a Jewish family in Cairo in 1948, Nathan had to flee his country with his family following the 1957 Egyptian Revolution. Educated in France, Nathan is a pioneering practitioner of ethno-psychiatry, and in 1993 he founded the Centre George Devereux where he worked primarily with migrants and refugees. He has served as a diplomat in Israel and Africa and is a Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2012, he received the prestigious Prix femina de l’essai for his memoir, Ethno-Roman, about his life as an Egyptian Jewish immigrant in France. The original French edition of A Land Like You was shortlisted for the Prix Goncourt in 2015.

Born into poverty in a destitute Jewish quarter of old Cairo, Zohar arrives in France with no family, no friends and no money. His only companion is the ghost of Dieter Boehm, his Nazi torturer. He leaves behind a war-torn Egypt: a land as unhealthy as its king, Faruk, who is softened by a life of luxury; a country poisoned by the rise of the Muslim Brother, by former Nazis infiltrating its army, pogroms against the Jews and the rebellion lead by the powerful Nasser.
Once in France, he shares his obsessions with Aaron, Lucien and Paulette, three people bound by their determination to break with an oppressive past. They treat their former tormentors to the same procedure: two bullets to the head, the first for revenge, the other as a signature.
This is the story that Zohar’s son François uncovers. It will help him understand the mysterious promise his father made to the “Society of Fine Folks” – a promise François decides to honour.
An ethno-psychiatrist of the Georges Devereux school, professor of psychology and former diplomat, Tobie Nathan is also an essayist and novelist. Zohar Zohar was born in 1925 to a jewish family in egypt. He grew up in the jewish quarter disinherited of old Cairo. King Farouk is in power. Zohar Zohar trace his route and is successful in business. Corruption and violence spread everywhere in the egyptian society, without the possibility of return to normal. The rise of the muslim brotherhood, the presence of former nazis in the various workings of power, hatred and murder of jews. « If Farouk called for hatred of the jew to find favor in the eyes of his people, the Brethren were of one-upmanship, pounding in their preaching that it was the sacred duty of every muslim to eliminate every jew he met. As to the army, it piaffait in his boots waiting to take his revenge against the Jews. « The defeat of egypt, during the arab-israeli war of 1948, is in all the heads. The street is boiling. Lieutenant-colonel Gamal Abd el-Nasser, the founder of the Movement of free officers, overthrew king Farouk in July 1952. Zohar Zohar is pursued by the nazis. He fled his country and landed in Naples. From its first steps in Europe, Zohar Zohar meets Livia Iacopetti. He settled in France.
Sex and revenge
France wants to forget her past. Zohar is befriended by Aaron (a survivor of the ghetto of Wilno) and Lucien (a French resistant). They set up a fur trade. Zohar Zohar is haunted by the figure of Didier Boehm. An ideologue nazi and a war criminal who tortured his mother in Egypt. Zohar Zohar intends to honour the promise made to the Society of beautiful people, assembly of women in a popular district of Cairo, and does not forget where he comes from. The trio of friends is joined by Paulette. They are bound by the sex. They speak of forgiveness, they speak of loyalty. They speak about repentance, they speak of vengeance. Zohar Zohar falls under the spell of Mary Desnoyel. They have one child. They named him Francis. The sentence of De Gaulle on « a people of the elite, sure of itself, and domineering » is a thunderclap for many of the Jews of France. We are in 1967. Zohar Zohar disappears. He leaves behind a wife and a boy.
Tobie Nathan pays tribute to the children of the people. The Company of beautiful people, historical fresco where one crosses the king Farouk and the lieutenant-colonel Nasser, tells the story of the anonymous swept away by the Story. In a lively style, colorful, the author of This country who looks like you brings to life the popular districts of Cairo and Paris. A life of resourcefulness and solidarity. The figures of women are many. Livia (former prostitute and friend of choice), Thalia (journalist charged with spying on the Egyptians for the account of the Jews of Palestine), Paulette (loose woman living in Paris with Zohar, Aaron and Lucian), Mary (the mother of Francis, relinquished by the Zohar). Great scenes egyptian around the Kudiya, officiating respected and mistress of the spirits, shot by a firing machine gun. The funeral gives rise to a rebellion of joy. The portrait of king Farouk is a success. « A strange metamorphosis in reverse, from the fairy tales, the handsome prince with clear eyes had turned into a monster of nightmare. « The anger of the street is stirred up by the propaganda of the muslim brotherhood and the communists. The author perfectly shows the disconnect between the elites and the people. And what’s been happening.
Start over or repeat ?
All the history, between Cairo and Paris, revolves around the memory of intimate and collective. How anti-semitism has resurfaced in a crisis, how demagogues manipulate the anger of the peoples for their own benefit, how one inherits child greater than oneself, how one retains vitality in the face of adversity. The author’s book to be a reflection caustic and disturbing about revenge, honor, debt, loyalty. Can we aspire to a new life ? It is believed to go back, we stare. It is believed to start again, it repeats. A certainty rooted, nothing can be built on forgetting. The discrete François Zohar, born in 1965 in Paris, inherits from the hustle and bustle of the past. He will be able to take the sorrows and the joys.

X Æ A-XII… DE QUOI LE NOM EST-IL LE NOM ?
X Æ A-XII, C’est le prénom du nouveau-né – un garçon – de l’entrepreneur Elon Musk et de la chanteuse pop Grimes. Une bizarrerie de plus pour ce couple cultivant l’originalité? Et s’il s’agissait plutôt d’un code à déchiffrer?

Le nom est l’élément le plus arbitraire d’une personne : il lui est attribué, en général peu de temps après sa naissance, par des adultes selon leurs préoccupations propres. Pourtant, le nom exerce une influence majeure sur la psychologie et le développement de la personne, au point que les Romains de l’Antiquité avaient l’habitude de dire : nomen omen, « le nom est présage ». S’il se révèle parfois destin, vers lequel on tend sans le savoir ou contre lequel on lutte, le nom peut aussi constituer une carte pour s’orienter dans le monde et souvent une sorte d’amulette pour se protéger des dangers.
Le 5 mai 2020, leurs nombreux admirateurs ont été interloqués par le choix du prénom du fils d’Elon Musk et de Claire Boucher, plus connue sous son pseudonyme d’artiste Grimes. Le milliardaire, dirigeant de Tesla et de SpaceX, et la chanteuse canadienne ont appelé leur premier enfant X Æ A-XII, que l’on pourrait prononcer, selon le quotidien britannique The Daily Mail : « Ex Ash A Twelve ».
De toute évidence, ce prénom cache un mystère. On pourrait en décoder la signification en parcourant les différents modes de nomination que l’on peut rencontrer en Afrique. Là, les parents choisissent rarement seuls le prénom de leur enfant. Ils le font plutôt après consultation des anciens, voire d’un devin ou d’un marabout. Les plus courants sont les noms reprenant celui d’une personne, d’un grand-père, d’une grand-mère, d’un frère, d’un prophète – ce n’est pas le cas du prénom du bébé Musk… Et puis, tout aussi courants, les noms que l’on pourrait dire « automatiques » : selon le jour de naissance – lundi, mardi, jeudi… – ou les noms spécifiques aux jumeaux(Hassan et Hussein dans les univers musulmans, Adama et Hawa lorsqu’ils sont des deux sexes, Sagbo et Zinsu chez les Fon du Bénin, Taiwo et Kehindé chez les Yoruba…). Il y a aussi les noms qui expriment les circonstances de la grossesse et de la naissance, les conflits familiaux, la séparation des parents… comme Ntladi, par exemple, qui signifie « tonnerre » en langue sotho d’Afrique du Sud, pays d’où est originaire Elon Musk – Ntladi, un nom que l’on donne aux enfants nés un jour d’orage.
Enfin et surtout, les prénoms peuvent appartenir à une autre catégorie, qui nous intéressera ici : les « noms-messages », ces noms fabriqués pour adresser un message à quelqu’un – qui peut être une divinité, un esprit, mais aussi un puissant – pour le remercier ou le critiquer.
Le prénom de l’héritier Musk semble répondre à ce dernier cas. Selon les explications de Grimes, sa mère, il serait composé ainsi : X, la variable inconnue, Æ, l’intelligence artificielle réinterprétée d’après la graphie « elfique » du mot chinois ai qui signifie « amour », et A-12 (XII en chiffres romains), l’avion Lockheed A-12 Oxcart, précurseur du « SR-17 » (une confusion de Grimes : il s’agit en fait du SR-71, le fameux Blackbird) ayant battu des records de vitesse dans les années 1960.
Avec ces éléments, nous pouvons maintenant comprendre le sens du prénom. Il s’agit d’un message adressé à la divinité que révère Elon Musk, l’Intelligence artificielle, à qui il demande que la fusée de sa société (Space)X, batte, comme le A-12, les records de vitesse et d’endurance lors de son vol, imminent au moment de la naissance de l’enfant.
La divinité semble avoir exaucé le vœu du père : le 30 mai dernier, à 21h22 (heure de Paris), Doug Hurley et Bob Behnken ont décollé avec succès à bord de la capsule Crew Dragon emmenée par le lanceur Falcon 9 de SpaceX, redonnant aux États-Unis une place de choix dans la conquête de l’espace. Et, pour la première fois, c’est une société privée, celle d’Elon Musk, qui a donné le « go » du décollage.
